This week Pastor Josh continues teaching about being rooted in God. We learn about seven of the communicable attributes of God. Notes: The reason that this Doctrinal Study of God is so important is because we all need to think more highly of God. “…be imitators of God, as beloved children. Ephesians 5:1 The Communicable Attributes of God 1. Holiness Holiness for God means that he is completely separated from sin and is perfect. 14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24 2. Omnipotence God’s omnipotence means that he is able to accomplish His holy will. I am God, and there is none like me,10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ Isaiah 46:9-10 3. Sovereignty God has absolute rule over creation as King and total control and determination over all that happens. for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” Daniel 4:34-35 4. Omniscience God fully knows himself and all things actual and possible in one simple eternal act. 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:20 5. Wisdom God always chooses the best means to achieve His goals. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 6. Love God’s love means that God eternally gives Himself to others. 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39 7. Wrath God intensely hates all that is sinful. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. John 3:36 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Psalm 103:8
