This week Pastor Josh teaches on Communion and what it means to us. Here are some notes from the message: We have to be very intentional about instructing people not just on how we do things like the ordinances of Communion and Baptism, but why we do them. 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.” Matthew 26:26-29 The first and possibly most important it is a reminder of Christ’s death. 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26 Communion affirms our unity with other believers. 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 1 Corinthians 10:17 Jesus himself invites us to participate in the Lord’s Supper. Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Revelation 19:9 By participating in the Lord’s supper, we recognize and celebrate the great future that God has for us for all eternity. When we participate in the Lord’s supper is that we affirm our faith in Christ. We do not receive the elements to be saved, we receive the elements because we are already saved. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24 Four concepts to prayerfully consider as they pertain to your life: 1. Reflection- 2. Confession- 3.
